BIOGRAPHY
Barbet Schroeder – (pronounced “bar-bay”) Born Aug. 26, 1941, in Tehran, Iran. His father is a Swiss geologist from Geneva, his mother a German physician. After a childhood in Colombia, at the age of 11 he arrives in Paris and enters the French Lycée and Université systems. He studies Philosophy at the Sorbonne.
1958-1963: Journalist. Collaborates at the influential French film magazine, Cahiers du Cinéma and ‘L’air de Paris’
1961: Travels to India to work as a production assistant on a movie by Fritz Lang that gets cancelled, stays the next six months in India, traveling all across the country; Ends up working as an assistant photographer for an Italian publishing company.
1962: Assistant to Jean-Luc Godard on the film LES CARABINIERS. He directs two short 16mm B&W films.
1963: Creates the production company Les Films du Losange to produce PARIS VU PAR as his manifesto and to complete the postproduction of the first two “Moral Tales (Contes Moraux)” films of Eric Rohmer : LA BOULANGÈRE DE MONCEAU (in which he also had the starring role) and LA CARRIÈRE DE SUZANNE
–Nominated, Best Director, Oscars & Golden Globes, for REVERSAL OF FORTUNE
–Awarded French César, Best Documentary 2007 for L’AVOCAT DE LA TERREUR/TERROR’S ADVOCATE
–Nominated, Directors Guild of America (DGA), for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in feature film, Documentary, for TERROR’S ADVOCATE
